Gemini Hits 1 Billion Users — Google's Fastest-Growing Product Ever
Google’s Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly active users. CEO Sundar Pichai announced it on August 11. It’s the 14th Google product to reach the milestone — and one of the fastest.
ChatGPT crossed the same line in June 2026. Google reported “over 950 million monthly users” during its Q2 earnings call in late July, so the last 50 million took about two weeks. Daily active users tripled year over year.
The usage numbers are bizarre in the best way: 63% of Gemini users use the voice feature, the app generates more than 150 million images per day, and iOS alone has over 100 million active users.
One caveat: the 1 billion counts only the Gemini app. Google’s AI Mode in Search also has over 1 billion monthly users globally — separate number, same company.
The Capital Side: $1.1B for a Two-Month-Old Company
Meanwhile, the money story got louder. River AI — founded by Igor Babuschkin, co-founder of xAI — raised $1.1 billion out of stealth. The company is two months old.
General Catalyst and AMP PBC led. Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek joined. River AI wants to build personally trainable AI agents instead of human-worker replacements, and sells an API that supports reinforcement learning and LoRA fine-tuning on open models.
Two months old. $1.1 billion. 2026 remains a strange time to be in AI.
