Wild Dog Milk: The Chinese Meme That Outlives the Heat Death of the Universe

On August 9, a Douyin remix video claiming “nothing is eternal except the shelf life of wild dog milk” racked up 22 million likes in a day. The next morning, a follow-up titled “life fears time, and time fears wild dog milk” passed 300 million likes. The meme is now the hottest thing on the Chinese internet, and it has not been a good 48 hours for the concept of permanence.

The origin is a hunter-gatherer novelty video by a creator from Wuchuan, Guangdong, known as “吴川才子招茂才” (Wu Chuan’s talented man). It shows a wild berry the locals call “野生狗奶” — literally “wild dog milk” — and claims its shelf life is permanent. The name comes from the fruit’s shape: like a dog’s teat. “狗奶子” is a folk term for wild goji berries and similar wild fruits across southern China, though as one research roundup notes, the “Guangdong exclusive” framing is mostly marketing.

The Copypasta Constellation

The joke is the collision. The crudest possible food item gets wrapped in the grandest possible claims:

• “没有什么是永恒的，除非是野生狗奶的保质期” (méi yǒu shén me shì yǒng héng de, chú fēi shì yě shēng gǒu nǎi de bǎo zhì qī) — nothing is eternal except wild dog milk’s shelf life
• “生命畏惧时间，而时间畏惧野生狗奶” (shēng mìng wèi jù shí jiān, ér shí jiān wèi jù yě shēng gǒu nǎi) — life fears time, and time fears wild dog milk, a riff on the old line about time fearing the pyramids
• “何为永恒？只有野生狗奶与黄金为永恒” (hé wéi yǒng héng? zhǐ yǒu yě shēng gǒu nǎi yǔ huáng jīn wéi yǒng héng) — what is eternal? only wild dog milk and gold
• A confession version: “如果爱有保质期，我希望像野生狗奶” (rú guǒ ài yǒu bǎo zhì qī, wǒ xī wàng xiàng yě shēng gǒu nǎi) — if love has an expiry date, I want it to be like wild dog milk

The Spread

Douyin seeded it, then Bilibili’s meme explainers (梗指南, 热梗速报员) packaged it for a second wave. Sun Xiaochuan Bar on Baidu Tieba — the Chinese internet’s biggest meme dumping ground — picked it up, with one thread declaring “my love for you is like wild dog milk, forever fresh.” The meme went international fast: X users are posting about it, and someone already made a sticker pack. TikTok’s Chinese-language side is recycling it hourly.

What It Actually Is

This is abstract humor (抽象文化), the school of Chinese internet comedy that treats absurdity as its own punchline. Wild dog milk works because it pairs the most vulgar possible object with the most cosmic possible framing. The shelf-life claim is fake, the marketing is transparent, and that’s the point — the joke is that a dusty roadside berry gets elevated to the rank of the pyramids.

The 2026 update of the “cosmic romance” bit, basically. Last year it was gold and starlight. This year it’s a berry that sounds like it was named by a five-year-old. The lower the object, the higher the claim, the funnier it is.

One detail worth holding onto: the original video was made to sell something. The meme outgrew it in about 36 hours. Whatever the seller wanted, the internet decided the real product was permanence itself — and priced it at zero.
